This is an important movement of Tai Chi. If you practice this movement correctly for 1,000 times, you will experience results.

The reference move is posted in the video description.

Here's an example;

That appears to be yang style to me and a Wu Shu version of yang style

The first clip looks more like a qi gong.exercise , swimming on dry land.

Repulse monkey the arms/hands should cross.

The first clip looks like the stationary "repulse monkey" from the Yang "8"(or "10") form. What results could you expect from repeating an intentionally watered down qigong version of tai chi? What makes in intentionally watered down qigong version of tai chi an "important exercise." I guess I just don’t get it... :P

Really? Here's Chen Zhenglei doing it pretty much in the same style as the exemplar video. Do you have a video that expresses a way you think the movement should be done?

Yes, there is underlying qigong which was added to the original move.

That is very fair, we all see different things, even myself, so I try to compare and contrast with other videos. As for what results you could expect, I really cannot say for you ahead of time, as the results can vary from person to person. If you do this move (in Chen style) could you please post a video which you feel demonstrates a good way to express this posture? Thanks.

What are these “results” you will experience?

No, I have never been interested in Chen, I do Yang and Sun styles.

Here, around 2.35, Yang Shouzhong keeps his head forward, keeping his focus on the (imaginary) opponent. This is how I learned it. I have never cared much about Yang Chengfu's large frame variant, which is the common one, even in so called Yang Luchan forms. ::)

I think one benefit you will experience is that you will be qualified to judge whether or not the old legends are true. Once you have practiced each move for 1,000 times, and then 10,000 times (and so on) you will be able to say based on experience "I have been able to discern whether or not those parts of the training are beneficial or detrimental." At that point you will not need to ask others what the results or the benefits will be, because you will know them for yourself.

The absolute worst thing that can happen is that after even only two years you will be able to say with conviction that your training did not work -- because you stuck with it and were sincere in your attempt to understand. If you give up prematurely because life got in the way and you were unable to commit serious effort, then you will never really know what the results or benefits are, or even if the art itself has been lost or preserved.

There is a saying, "There is luck in the leftovers."

I'm still left wondering what these "results" you promised are. To paraphrase your answer - the result is that you will now know if it works or not. Well, that doesn't sound like a tangible thing to me. You're also not defining what it is you're trying to do.

"beneficial or detrimental"... for what?

What is the goal?

Is it brushing demons away from your soul? Is it just hanging out in the park with some friends? Is it making your qi flow? Is it a martial art?

The title of the video is that it is a basic Tai Chi movement. So I did define what it is that I am trying to do.

For learning Tai Chi.

GrahamB wrote:What is the goal?

Learning Tai Chi, teaching beginners Tai Chi, etc.

No, it is not brushing demons away from your soul lol. Hanging out with friends is a bonus, qi flow included. There are also some who would say Tai Chi is a martial art. What about you, do you do Tai Chi as a martial art?

It's many things, depending on what you want to do with it. It keeps my soul demon-free.

If you aren’t tucking your tailbone under, rounding your back, lifting Huiyin point, lifting your crown and tucking your chin to vertically align Baihui with Huiyin, touching the tip of your tongue to the soft palate, and hollowing your chest, then this exercise is a complete waste of time.
