A bit ironic how BL in the US was around at the karate tournaments of the day to promote his non competition MA.
In '64, karate tournaments were point-fights, not full contact. There were underground fights, but people didn't get their records recorded. Anyway, BL was invited to the first Long Beach International by Ed Parker (who taught kenpo and published a book "Chinese Karate" around that time. Parker appeared in several movies).
Anyway, it's not unusual or unexpected that BL didn't do point fighting. According to Joe Lewis, BL was at least one of the first to promote full-contact karate. Besides, the point is that jkd (nor krav maga, etc) are not designed for competition or sport. Ok, it's not designed for a battlefield, but it's something a soldier could use in cqc. Just like being able to march 10 miles with a 70lb pack.

Otoh, yeah, this has a lot of hero worship, so ignore the dialog and skip to the 4:00 mark.
