Friends,

I strongly recommend whoever find the clips interesting and do not have a good command of Chinese to find a friend who knows Chinese to go over the clips and the blog writings. The Old Master is very good in writing ...if you don't read the blog, you will miss a lot too!

Here's a small attempt to translate couple of short extract of the blog writings to whet your appetite:

""72死手就是72套组合拳,其实都可以拆成“零件”,任意组装。比如,每一手都有“进手入身”法,你如果能掌握几种,一旦入身,可以接茬各种打法。
现在展示72死手是为了展示神奇的绵张拳。基础好的人可能一看就有启发,把它融汇到自己的拳里,能用得上,对于一般的朋友来说,不可能用得上,还不如“瞎打”顺手。""

72 dead hands are 72 combinations fighting sequence. It can be separated to its "components" and then combined differently. For example, every combination sequence consists of an "entering" method. If you know and in control of several of these "entering" method, once you "entered", you can than connect to different methods or techniques.

I am showing the 72 dead hands to demonstrate how magnificent is the Mian Zhang Quan. People with good foundation will be inspired and be able to integrate them into their Art and use them. For the ordinary people, they will not be able to use them. Its better for them to just "fight blindly" and that will be more natural.

"下棋有“死棋”,通过一系列的着法,将对方“将死”,无可救药。
打拳的“死手” 也是这个意思,通过一系列的招法,将对方“将死”,无可救药。"

In Chess, there are "end game" sequences. Using a sequence of moves, you can "checkmate" your opponent.
"dead hand" has the same meaning in fighting. Using a sequence of moves, you can "kill" or "drop" your opponent.

The analogy of Chess and Martial Art is quite appropriate. Any one who plays chess to a certain level studies a lot of "Opening" sequences, "end game" sequences and "Masters games" etc. So, in Martial Art, you will not just study a form sequence [one Masters game] only! You have to study something like the 72 dead hands!

The guy's name is Jiao Jianguo

Thanks Kid, part of what I've been harping on lately, this teacher is real and is giving honest. I dont speak or read the language, but because I have had the same quality of giving and honesty in my own teacher, I can see much just from the clips. Once you get past a certain stage in training, no matter the art it becomes about understanding the principles and all technique becomes the same. Thanks again for sharing the find, I will study them, and I will take your advice in getting a translator, I'm sure there are some golden nuggets in the tutorial as well. Just the little I've seen I realize he explains the simplicity of unhinging the jaw, something my teacher also shared. My teacher always admonished often " this is real fighting not sport ", when showing necessary techniques for winning, not always the nicest of tricks.

He's also known as Zhēn Dìng Lǎo Rén 真定老人, which means almost exactly that.

Here are two links on youtube:

The first one is very interesting to me since it's on bagua small scissor stepping. He shows many practical applications: bagua has lots of excellent leg techniques, most of which aren't taught or well understood. I like his subtle unbalancing methods, which are almost invisible. You can sometimes see him here using the tiniest amount of raising force immediately before a throw or trip, using soft sticky force rather than lifting from underneath, which is too easily countered.

Old masters like this provide a good case for the argument that you need to feel a technique to understand it. His videos are full of practical examples of how to make IMA concepts work with muay thai and other hard skills. As well as bagua he also does xingyi, interesting though unorthodox.

Pretty sure it's the same style:

Qi Jiguang mentions it in his book written in 1560 a.d. --

In that time (1560) it looks like it was called [Zhang Family] "12 'Duan Da' (short strike) Boxing" and it also seems like the originator's nick-name was maybe "Mian" (due, either to being mild-mannered or the softness in his strikes) so the style is also called 'Mian Zhang's Quan/ Boxing'.

Qi Jiguang wrote ~ ...Among the past and present fist specialists, the Song Great Founder (Song Taizua founded the Song Dynasty in 960 A.D. and reigned until 976 A.D.) had the Long Fist System [Chang Quan Men] with 32 positions. Moreover there are six pace and fist techniques, the Monkey Fist, and the Feinting Fist. The famous positions each have their own names, but in reality they are quite similar and scarcely differ from one another.

Looking at Master Wen in the present day [1560 A.D.], we have the 72 moving fist methods [七十二行拳 Qishier Xing Quan], the 36 combining and locking techniques [三十六合锁 Sanshiliu He Suo], the 24 counter-spy [二十四探马 Ershisi Tan Ma] techniques, the 8 flash flips [八閃翻 Ba Shan Fan], and the 12 short strikes [十二短打 Shier Duan Da]. These are the best of the lot. As for Lu Hong's 8 blows, while they are firm [吕红有八下之刚], they do not measure up to Min Zhang's short strike. The leg techniques of Shangdong's Li Bantian [山东有李半天之腿], Eagle Claw Wang's grappling methods [鹰爪王之拿], Thousand Stumble Zhang's stumbling techniques, Zhang Bojing's strikes [张伯敬之打], the Shaolin monastery stick fighting art, together with the Green Field cudgel methods, all stand as equals. Mr. Yang's spear arts together with the open hand, fist, and quarterstaff skills, are all famous to the present day. ("These men were apparently martial arts masters who claimed fame at least until Qi Jiguang's day. Qi refers to them by their trade names.)

I really enjoyed these as much as I could without being able to understand them. I'd really like to see more stuff done like this with English explanations, you know techniques with a full breakdown on how and why.

Best,

Yes, he is giving a lot! In this clip:

http://video.sina.com.cn/v/b/100012868-1588640862.html.

Pay attention to 3:56 - 4:24. He was showing a little bit of the Anti-joint lock moves that he treasures, and said he was not going to go into depth on the Internet for fear of transmission to the bad people.

Here's another gem if you are interested in understanding the often seem flowery moves of sword forms:

Again, Enjoy!!

These are things one learns and becomes familiar with when they are true to their art, and have the patience to study diligently and delve deeply. They are also the things that people will look at the pictures and try to copy, with little understanding of what is truly happening, when it doesn't work in a fight they blame the art and move on to some other art that " does " work. He is a teacher who knows only those who know will learn something here.

Well said.

I "think" he also knows that it is as difficult to find a talented student who can learn and execute all the stuffs he knew, as to find a good teacher who knew a lot and not insecure and hide a lot of stuffs.

These " True " teachers are becoming more and more rare, if you know one never take his knowledge for granted, and learn as much as you can.

Great share Taijikid, thanks. The master is amazing. This style , which is demonstrated in all these videos - is it purely Zhang style short boxing
or master's own blend of different styles ?
