George Silver was The Man.

Roland's videos are always excellent

2:35 they talk about advancing and retreating

they talk of leading with the front leg.
fwiw: n-mantis has similar actions and reasoning behind it.

another example of the same idea

Jaime, that was excellent - thanks.

I think these are the issues that you should actually be concerned about say 90% of the time when considering body mechanics in a martial art, not wether it's internal or not. You can be as internal as you like, but if you can't actually hit anyone (who knows what they're doing) then logically, it doesn't matter!

The reason his foot is so slow is his bad body mechanics

The time of hand/body/foot distinction was first written about by this guy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Silver in the 16th century. If you're starting in a reasonable position, it's always going to be quicker to hit someone by just moving the arm/hand than to step or move the body.

In comparison, the stance taken by modern sport fencers is entirely linear and is the equivalent of comparing olympic TKD with some form of actual combative art. That sport, while gret for practicing elements of movement and coordination, is aimed at tagging the other person a fraction of a second before they tag you, which is anathema to historical arts where you actually want to survive after killing the other person.

That's awesome - Silver was having the sport vs street argument of today in 1605!

great videos in this thread. first one was best.

something what i've been saying for years:

taiji teacher- "power comes from the foot, through legs, up spine and/waist, expressed through the hands"
boxing teacher (just the reverse)- "throw the punch, and turn your shoulder, hips, knee and foot".

Falling step dempsey video was good too.

Punching from the hand can be quick, non-telegraphic and as powerful as it needs to be when placed correctly. It's often the best option in real-time situations

I think it was Alex Kostic that referred to this concept as "the thinking fist", neat to see it mentioned on here.
