There was a recent thread ( gone to the pit) that brought up the 'wushu' issue.
Since the 1950s the Chinese government of the day began to introduce Wushu as a sport. (Taolu and Sanshou)
I guess they wanted to promote it as a point of natonal pride and culture, a way to develop it's population and physical fitness. I think it also wanted to control this quite powerful and influential aspect of it's peoples culture and politics.
A lot of people lament its influence on Traditional Chinese Martial Arts. ( Just look at the new IWUF Tai Chi competition form!)
But is it all bad? I don't know.
A fellow training buddy and Hap Gar TCMA club member of mine sent me this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAxJSnBQ6TMHis comment was "AAArrrrgh.......Whats next, Wing Tsun with Butterfly Kicks!?!"
So you get to play spot the 'Modern Wushu moves" added to the traditional form (sorry no prizes included).
Thing is though, the guy doing this looks to be a pretty good athlete and has pretty good 'gung fu' in my opinion.
( I know, just a form and not sanda or fighting)
