Here’s an animal system from my teacher called the Rooster. It uses a lot of simple but unorthodox methods. It has 8 能
néng like the other animals. Here he’s showing some of them in isolation but they can be combined with each other. The idea is to train hand shapes that use the same principles and strategies.

I thought you might enjoy these because they seem similar to stuff you do, but I may be wrong

- separate hands,
- neck wiping,
- back arm jam leading arm,
- use pull to set up strike,
- ...

A lot of good principles/strategies there. When I see videos like these, I get excited. :)

Very nice stuff, really shows the TCMA fighting strategy (get in close, each strike leads up / sets up the next, either accept the hit or get thrown, etc). Would love to learn this just as a stand-alone system!

If you’re around Huairou district of Beijing in March you can study with the man. I’m not sure when he’s going to be able to travel again.

I found some video samples from some of the dvd’s/ online videos that they made

The Rooster is the middle daughter of the trigrams, who is the Tomboy, so it has Yin tactics that men don’t expect, but combined with the innate desire for fighting and using the raw power that men bring, and using powerful dynamic throwing. It’s a challenge to understand it, but once you grasp it, it’s really fun to practice.

The rooster is contrasted by the Snake system which is the middle son, who’s been picked on his whole life and wants to finish fights as fast as possible because it doesn’t like to fight. The power is yin and yeilding but the end result is yang. It’s ruthless.

So Jinbao sometimes likes to show them together because the snake is the yin (finishing moves if you’re overwhelmed or desperate) to the rooster, while the rooster is the yang to the snake (entry moves, assessing the opponent’s power).

The Rooster’s trigram is the Li which has a solid line at the top, a broken line in the middle and a solid line on the bottom. This is why the Rooster uses the elbow joints as a primary source of power in its striking. Moving the arm from bent to straight drives the hand strikes. The representational posture (called embracing the moon at the chest), is how one develops strength in the elbows. The forearms should be parallel with the ground and both twisting towards the thumb or radial side. You can feel the precise point where, as you lift up your elbows to slightly higher than your hands, you can feel when some muscles and ligaments get activated around your elbow joints. That’s where you want to hold the posture while both in Zhan Zhuang and Circle Turning.

What's the purpose of this training? Is it a strike? Where is the target of this strike? I understand this is power generation. But what are you going to do with this power? Why do you strike with palm and not fist?

Sometimes, I don't understand why people may train certain thing. There are so many things that's worthwhile to train. Why do you want to train this particular drill?

What will you miss if you don't train this drill?

You can replace the open palms with fists. Typically you might want to use open palms to the skull then fists to inner door of the torso. If your wrists aren’t flexible then you definitely would want to use fists.
Here’s the video showing some applications of that movement.

Jinbao teaches all the Animals as stand alone systems. Lately he’s been teaching Rooster and Snake. Monkey is cool but he’s only teaching that in China. If you’re on Facebook I could invite you to the expats YSB group and you can see more videos of what they’re up to and maybe meet up with them and Jinbao.
